World Children's Day Explained

November 20th is World Children’s Day. The day is celebrated each year, and was first established by the United Nations to promote togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and to help improve children’s welfare.

November 20th marks the day that the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of The Child in 1959, and on the same day in 1989 adopted The Convention of the Rights of the Child. It is described as ‘a fun day with a serious message’ where a range of events take place across the world. This year Unicef UK are running the #outright4climate campaign and are inviting children to explain why they care about climate change and how it affects children’s rights.

Although November 20th is when it is celebrated here in the UK, there are also other Children’s Days celebrated on different dates globally, each marking different historical landmarks for children’s rights.
