Our application process is broken up into three stages: application, assessment, support and approval. Throughout the whole process you will be offered support and advice and there will be lots of opportunities to ask questions at every stage.
Covid-19: We’re still here to support your fostering journey. Following latest government guidelines regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, we have made some alterations to our usual service to ensure the safety of both our fostering team and the public. Getting Started
However you choose to get in touch with us, via our website, email, telephone, social media or at an event, you will be in contact with our fostering team who can discuss any initial questions you might have. When you are ready to take the next step and meet with one of our fostering team, you can book a fostering information visit. With this information we will need to carry out some basic background checks which are routinely carried out with all potential foster carers to support the next stage of the application process. The information visit is a chance for us to tell you a bit more about the amazing benefits of fostering in Rotherham and for you to ask any questions you might have.
If you are an existing Rotherham foster carer, or somebody who works for Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, you can earn up to £500 by referring a foster carer. If you have been referred by somebody, don’t forget to let us know during your application.

STAGE 1 - APPLICATION
In order to start the application process, we will need to meet any other members of your household to make sure that they understand what fostering is and to answer any questions they have. Following on from the home visit if you are happy to apply and we think you meet all the requirements to become a foster carer you will be given a fostering application form to complete. You will need to provide work, family and personal references as part of this stage of the application and we will use your application form to carry out medical and statutory checks with local authority and safeguarding, including a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). If you have any issues or questions completing the application form our support teams will be on hand to guide you and provide assistance. While we carry out these necessary checks, this is the perfect time to ask your social worker as many questions as you like about fostering in Rotherham and use their valuable experience to prepare yourself and your family for the amazing journey you are starting together.

STAGE 2 - ASSESSMENT
You will be assigned your own personal social worker who you will meet you regularly to get to know you better as well as your family and your extended support network. They will also help you complete any necessary paperwork required during the assessment stage. You will be invited to attend one of our Skills to Foster training courses. This is led by our Fostering Team and existing local foster carers who are there to share their experiences with you openly and honestly. This part of the application process is often what our current foster families have found the most useful as it really helps you to understand what being a foster carer will be like. Skills to Foster is just the first step of your training as a foster carer. Fostering Rotherham offer a huge amount of training and support to their foster carers to support them through their foster journey. During this stage of the application process, you may want to discuss these benefits with your social worker.

STAGE 3 - SUPPORT
Towards the end of the assessment period, your personal social worker will work with you to complete a Fostering Assessment report. You will have full visibility of the report and can add your own feedback and comments. You will be then be invited to attend a Fostering Panel where your personal social worker’s assessment and recommendations are discussed. This usually takes no longer than 30 minutes where you may be asked just a few questions. While this may seem a little daunting, but don't worry, your social worker will be with you every step of the way and will help you prepare for the process. You will be told at the Fostering Panel whether or not your application has been recommended for approval and passed to the Agency Decision Maker (ADM) to make a final decision. Once you’re approved as a foster carer, you will receive a welcome pack and be allocated a supervising social worker. You will then begin your induction into our amazing network of Rotherham foster carers.
