World Book Day 2022

This year World Book Day takes place on 3rd March. World Book Day aims to change lives through a love of books and shared reading to ensure that all children can experience the life-changing power of books. Research undertaken by World Book Day shows that reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of World Book Day – with the message for all children ‘you are a reader‘.

The team behind World Book Day continue to work with schools and nurseries to distribute their £1 book tokens. Books are available for beginning, early, fluent and independent readers, so there is something for everyone. The books are available from booksellers now.

World Book Day has also made a number of children’s audiobooks available for free on their website. There is a range of titles available for children of all ages. There are picture books, including “Chatterbox Bear” by Pippa Curnick, young fiction books, such as “The Wizard in My Shed” by Simon Farnaby, and Fiction for older children such as “Robin Hood” by Robert Muchamore.  A number of free online events are also taking place. Visit the World Book Day website for more information.

We know that many of our foster carers and their families hugely enjoy reading, so we asked our fostering families and the team here at Fostering Rotherham to give us their children’s book recommendations:

Jane - Foster Carer:

“Our 10 month old little one really loves feely books and her favourite at the moment is "That's not my kitten!"  She is able to turn the pages and points to the significant touchy, feely bits on each page. She clearly enjoys books even at this young age. Her second favourite is "Peppa’s Castle Adventure". Again, she points to the characters and turns the pages anticipating the next one along. It’s such a joy to see her enjoying books”.

Angela - Foster Carer:

“We’ve just returned a 3 year old back to her Mummy this January, my absolute favourite book to read with her was “Wonky Donkey”. I had to insist that we read it one final time at bedtime on her last night with us”.

Chrissie - Fostering Rotherham Team

“My children like to read  ‘Ten Little Dinosaurs’ by Mike Brownlow and Simon Rickerty”. It is a great book for teaching young children their numbers”.

Charlotte - Fostering Rotherham Team

My sons are 7 and 9 years old.  We’ve really enjoyed reading Jamie Littler’s Frostheart series. It’s a great adventure story with strong characters who are great role models. The boys were absolutely hooked and couldn’t wait for the next chapter each evening!”
