Vicky's Story

As a supermarket employee, Vicky is always going the extra mile to help people. During one of her shifts, Vicky found herself talking to an elderly lady, holding her hand, and helping with her shopping. This experience made Vicky realise that she wanted to do more to help the most vulnerable. That very same day, she saw an appeal for Rotherham foster carers whilst watching the news and "the rest is history".

Vicky found the foster carer application process easy, she found the process cathartic, and enjoyed discovering what it takes to become a foster carer. Vicky believes the qualities needed to be a good foster carer are "patience, a good ear for listening, the want to help, empathy, organisation skills, and a soft side matched by a sterner side when needed".

Vicky told us that she's received good support during her time as a foster carer, especially from her supporting social worker.  She also told us that she often has discussions with her eighteen-year-old foster son about race, particularly in response to topical news stories. At Fostering Rotherham, we aim to support all our carers with the training they need to care for children from all backgrounds.  

“I said I was thankful we were all healthy. My son said he was thankful for his Xbox. My foster son simply said "you, I’m thankful for you".

When asked what her proudest moment has been as a foster carer, Vicky said, "One Thanksgiving, I told my foster son and my birth son to tell me what they were thankful for. I said I was thankful we were all healthy. My son said he was thankful for his Xbox. My foster son simply said "you, I’m thankful for you".
